If faith without action is dead, than the knowledge without practice is also dead

My name is Renáta Botházi, I am 21 years old. In present I am a student in my 3`rd year at the Babes-Bolyai University, Roman-Catholic Faculty, learning social theology. In spring 2011 I had the opportunity to go to Campina to the Mâna Deschisa rehabilitation center, where I spent 3 months working with mostly addicted people. I was living in the same house with the clients, and I had the same daily routine like them.

My goal was to see how it works in an institution like this; to challenge myself in a new environment, culture and of course to put my knowledge into practice. It was a big challenge for me because I have never been on practice before and I have never been so far for so long from my family and friends.

Fortunately, everybody was really nice with me in the centre, the clients and the staff too. They had consideration for me, because I could not speak very well Romanian. I grew up in a little Hungarian town, so I could not learn to speak Romanian language fluently.

Despite the difficulties, it was an amazing experience for me, I learned a lot about my profession. Now I can see clearly how hard is to work with people, mainly with addicted people. These people need a lot of love, attention, patience during their recovery, things they maybe never felt in their life before. My opinion is that practice is essential for somebody, who wants to work as a social worker; this is the only way to find out if he/she is capable to do this kind of work. I overestimated myself regarding this work, but now I know my strengths and weaknesses. I found it really hard to keep the professional distance from the clients and to say `no` in different situations. Now that I know my weak points, I can change and in this way I can become a better social worker. I learned not only about my profession, the new situations showed me a` new Renata`, whom I did not know before.

As a conclusion I would like to say that: if faith without action is dead, than the knowledge without practice is also dead.
